Furniture Adventures

Sometimes you just need to walk through a very dark foresty park at night to feel adventure again. Okay, we were close to semi-lighted roads, a motorway and a railway station, but who comes up with this idea of a pathway through a dark park as the only way to get to the nearby neighbourhood? I heard a hooting owl.

Maarten and I are moving house, which is fun, new and stressful. We also decided that we were going to pay more attention to decoration this time, and not just accept any furniture that was thrown at us from helping familymembers and dead grandparents. Not to be ungrateful, I loved living in our Utrecht shack for two years, feeling like proper students with our non-matching equipment, but now it’s time for something that feels like we created an atmosphere ourselves.

I still like ugly-but-soft-and-sweet furniture. In thrift stores I walk straight to huge, old, floral grandma chairs, colourful glass plates and vases, soft purple couches and funny used mugs, look at Maarten and find his face going ‘really?’. Yes, really. But fine, I’ll accept our new hipsterfurniture style that makes us want to buy simple chairs at more than 100 euros a piece.

Something that’ll probably be always weird is going to random people’s houses, look at furniture, and go home again to make a decision whether or not to buy it. That is exactly what we did tonight: we walked through dark forests to arrive at a house, home to a perfect family. The woman was highly pregnant and told us her due date was TODAY. Later on Maarten told me he would never have done that if he would have been the pregnant case – I’m sorry, boyfriend, not a very likely story – and I had to admit I didn’t even think about it. I just thought ‘PERFECT FAMILY – are you a model – this husband of yours makes weird jokes – wow did you actually say you build this house from scratch – I love this couch’.

So yes, the couch we went to see is approved and uglypretty! Hopefully it will fit right into our new living room and we’ll be a step closer to our Home That Doesn’t Look Random. Matching colours and all.

We’ll keep you updated! Oh, but first I’ll be on the other side of the world.
